The respiration rates of samples of activated sludge fed with synthetic sewage are measured in an enclosed cell containing an oxygen electrode after a contact time of 3 hours.
The sensitivity of each batch of activated sludge is checked with a positive control (reference substance).
Range finding test includes at least 3 concentrations of the test substance, 1 Blank control, 1 Abiotic control, ATU Controls and treatments.
Main Test includes 1 or 5 concentrations of the test substance, 1 Blank control, 1 Abiotic control, ATU Controls and treatments, Reference substance (at least 1 concentration for each batch of sludge).
% of inhibition of Total Oxygen consumption at each concentration and, if requested, % of inhibition of heterotrophic oxygen uptake and inhibition of oxygen uptake due to nitrification. ECx values (if applicable).
